Located in the heart of the historic River Severn market town Bridgnorth this appointment witnessed the transformation of a 1970s room in roof style bungalow into a two-storey 20th century contemporary family home.
Starting at the heart of the original dwelling the front room and galley kitchen were merged and widened with an externally modest yet internally transformative side extension.
By adding just over a meter in width to the plan allowed the rooms to be reprogrammed in a more functional ratio.
This small addition at ground floor when transposed up to the dormer roof space with the steep existing roof pitch meant an overall first floor gain in usable full height head of over 40%. This new first floor space offered the opportunity for two neat children’s bedrooms in the new part and reappropriation of the original tired back bedroom into a feature family bathroom. The remaining space to the front elevation was carved up to create a new spacious master bedroom and en-suite.
With the existing dwelling Set almost three meters above road level arguably the most functional and transformative component of this scheme was the decision to flip and re-design the existing steep banked driveway. The new design provides a functional off-road drive space a landscaped lazy staircase and feature planting bays.
The exterior aesthetic is lifted with a new feature oak framed porch and gable cladding. The palette of natural timber and off-white render creates a timeless modern look from the street whilst not reinventing the street scene to feel stand alone.
This scheme really demonstrates how small architectural additions and amendments can have transformational effect on how a building is used and enjoyed.
