Focus was thrilled to be appointed as the architect for a unique renovation project, having previously been involved in the technical delivery of the adjoining dwelling a year prior. Despite the identical footprint and surrounding context between the two sites, the client brief for the renovation project resulted in a distinctly different design outcome.

The neighbouring cottage had undergone substantial refurbishment, leaving the proposal site slightly disjointed. Focus sought to re-balance both the architectural massing and visual appearance of the two dwellings by modifying the property to create a modern family home while complementing the woodland site context.

While the proposed scheme shares the same floor area increase and general roof ridgeline datums as the neighbouring development, the client's chosen internal room configuration and solar orientation within the site drove a more individual environmentally-driven elevational arrangement.   

The detailed brickwork projections take inspiration from that of the original cottage but implement it in a sleek contemporary fashion in careful manor to appreciate and accentuate rather than simply copy and replicate.

The renovation project both individually and collectively with the adjoining site hopes to set a precedent as an example of how traditional dwellings can be developed with a more contemporary architectural style while respecting and celebrating the original design nuances. 

The scheme whilst boasting traditional aesthetics is very much a future home in terms of specification and energy managment as an all electric scheme with a smart home managment system to control air source fed underfloor heating systems boosted by PV roof cells.
