House Of Two Halves

Project Category | Extension & Renovation

Project Budget | £250k – 500k

RIBA Stages | 2-6

Shropshire Lodge, a lodge previously associated with the Grade I listed Patshull Hall and located within the Grade II Registered Park and Garden, underwent a series of architectural interventions to transform it into a modern and sleek home. Focus Architects was appointed to oversee the stage 4 technical design and construction of the contemporary side extension.

One advantage that the property had was that it was no longer considered curtilage listed due to its separation distance from Patshull Hall, following the amendment of the Historic England Advisory Note (HEAN) guidance. This meant that any proposed architectural intervention needed to be of a high standard with a subservient appearance to that of the host dwelling.

The single-storey extension, which was designed to offer a contrast to the monolithic stone-built lodge yet complement its original aesthetic and architectural character, underwent a series of design amendments during the stage 4 technical resolution. Focus Architects prepared and applied for appropriate planning variations to ensure that the project remained permitted and construction could proceed without delay.

The success of the initial appointment led to follow-on appointments for the detached double garage and the internal reconfiguration of the original lodge hallway and kitchen. These later interventions required successful planning and listed building applications, which were all approved.

The internal reconfiguration, in particular, was a standout feature of the project, with the original lodge hallway and kitchen transformed into a feature open stairwell with oversized picture glazing to harness the panoramic views of the greenbelt setting as a visual backdrop. The overall result is a stunning transformation of a historic property into a modern home that respects its heritage and surroundings.

Focus Architects is proud to have been involved in this amazing transformation and is still overseeing the remaining construction works. Our expertise in obtaining planning permission for house extensions in Shropshire, coupled with our attention to detail and commitment to delivering high-quality projects, has helped to ensure the success of this project. We look forward to sharing the completed project with our followers in due course.
